POLICE DOG RECRUITMENT DRIVE BY HUMBERSIDE POLICE
A RECRUITMENT drive is underway in Humberside Police to identify some new candidates for the force’s Dog Section.
In total the force needs to recruit four new search dogs and is currently looking for Labrador or Springer or Cocker spaniel type dogs to be trained as drug and cash detection dogs.
The dogs need to be of a good temperament, aged between 12 and 24 months old and have a high drive to both search for and play with a ball.
Dog handler, Sergeant Alan Park, said: “We have been in touch with our usual contacts including private breeders and rescue centres, but we are struggling to come up with many dogs that fit the bill and so we now need to look a bit further afield.”
Once fully trained, the dogs will be involved in searching for illegal drugs in all manner of policing operations as well as cash searches.
The new intakes will be allocated to a dog handler and become part of a team with that handler and live at home with them as all police dogs do.
The training will take place over a five week period and after then the dogs will be allocated to jobs across the force area which will include the searching of vehicles that have been used in crimes and attendance at the execution of drugs warrants.
Anyone who has a dog they think may be appropriate and might make a good police dog should, in the first instance, contact dog handlers Jon Fenton on 07917 174632 or Paul Harrison 07976 618646 for further information
WIND TURBINE PLANS FOR BRIDLINGTON
Plans could soon be submitted for a five-turbine wind farm near Bridlington.
Airvolution Energy Ltd has carried out an environmental impact assessment into proposals for the farm, which would contain five 125m-high turbines at Demming Farm, just south east of Bridlington.
Each turbine, which could be the Vestas 90 model, could generate two megawatts of energy and ten in total.
Airvolution Energy Ltd says it has carried out a detailed study in choosing this site.
The company is set to submit a planning application in the coming months.
East Riding Council planning officers will consider the report before making a recommendation.

BRIDLINGTON PENSIONER CHOSEN TO MEET QUEEN
PENSIONER Shirley Cummings was highly intrigued when a letter arrived from Buckingham Palace.
It turned to excitement when the letter contained an invitation to meet the Queen at an historic event.
Mrs Cummings, 77, is just one of 86 retired people to be presented with Maundy Money this year.
She said: "I had no idea what the letter was and was more than a little intrigued because it bore the Queen's crest.
"When I opened it I couldn't believe it was an invitation to meet the Queen at York Minster to receive Maundy Money.
"I am a great admirer of the Queen and thrilled to be meeting her in this special Diamond Jubilee year."
In past times the Monarch gave the money to the poor, but now the ceremony recognises those who have given outstanding service to their community.
The historic ceremony normally takes place at Westminster Abbey, and the last time it was held at York Minster was in 1972.
This year, a special set of coins have been minted to mark the Diamond Jubilee, and the 86 recipients represent a year in the Queen's life.
Mrs Cummings, of Bridlington, said: "It really is an honour to be nominated and be one of just 86 people to be invited to the ceremony.
"I am thrilled to be part of history in the making, and it is something you never envisage will happen to you.
"Like all recipients, I do not know who nominated me, but it was a wonderful surprise and something I will cherish for the rest of my life."
Originally an Essex girl, Mrs Cummings has lived in Bridlington 43 years. Her husband Geoffrey died ten years ago.
She is well-known for her work in the community being chairman of the Bridlington Rotherham Society, a social group for elderly folk.
Mrs Cummings runs the town's Time Ahead social group for the over-60s and is also editor of the Bridlington Priory magazine.
"Although I never thought about being rewarded for my work, it is fantastic to be recognised by the Queen," she said.
Her family will be there to witness the historic occasion on Maundy Thursday, April 5.

CHRISTMAS WASTE JACKPOT
East Riding residents hit the Christmas and New Year jackpot both by increasing the amount of waste they recycled and reducing what was sent to landfill.
The amount of waste collected from the blue recycling bins by East Riding of Yorkshire Council was 2,365 tonnes, an increase of 67 per cent over the amount collected a year ago.
Much of the increase was due to the roll out last year of the larger blue bins and the collection of glass, further plastics and Tetra Pak food and drink cartons.
The good news continued with the fall in the amount collected from the green bins to 6,800 tonnes which was sent for landfill, a reduction of 26 per cent.
The winner’s cup, though, went to the brown bins with a 260 per cent increase in the waste collected and sent for composting. This was partly due to the roll out last year of the collection of food waste and cardboard in the brown bins.
Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning, said; “These are stunning results. The folk of East Riding pulled out all the stops over Christmas and in January to keep out of landfill as much of their waste as they could.
“The increase in what was put in the brown bins shows our residents heeded the calls to put the turkey carcases and cardboard packaging in the brown bins. Their enthusiasm will help us to provide the compost giveaways in a few months’ time”
Beverley area:
254 tonnes of glass, paper, plastics, cans and Tetra Pak were collected from the blue bins in the area, an increase of 39 per cent on last year’s figures. The reduction on the amount of waste in the green landfill bins was 27 per cent.
Bridlington area: 323 tonnes of glass, paper, plastics, cans and Tetra Pak were collected from the blue bins in the area, an increase of 65 per cent on last year’s figure. The reduction in the amount of waste in the green landfill bin was 22 per cent.
Driffield: 237 tonnes of glass, paper, plastics, cans and Tetra Pak were collected from the blue bins in the area, an increase of 40 per cent on last year’s figure. The reduction in the amount of waste in the green landfill bin was 22 per cent.
Haltemprice: 394 tonnes of glass, paper, plastics, cans and Tetra Pak were collected from the blue bins in the area, an increase of 72 per cent on last year’s figure. The reduction in the amount of waste in the green landfill bins was 27 per cent.
Holderness Area: 295 tonnes of glass, paper, plastics, cans and Tetra Pak were collected from the blue bins in the area, an increase of 75 per cent on last year’s figure. The reduction in the amount of waste in the green landfill bins was 36 per cent.
Market Weighton & Pocklington: 288 tonnes of glass, paper, plastics, cans and Tetra Pak were collected from the blue bins in the area, an increase of 58 per cent on last year’s figure. The reduction in the amount of waste in the green landfill bins was 28 per cent.
Goole: 278 tonnes of glass, paper, plastics, cans and Tetra Pak were collected from the blue bins in the area, an increase of 69 per cent on last year’s figure. The reduction in the amount of waste in the green landfill bins was 17 per cent.
Parking Enforcement in Bridlington
Civic leaders have called for a common sense approach to parking enforcement in the town.
It follows complaints about the number of tickets being handed out since East Riding Council took over the job from the police.
Town mayor Cyril Marsburg warned a heavy-handed approach could damage trade and businesses.
He said: "While warning people to make sure they park correctly for the allotted period, I would like to see a common sense approach from traffic wardens which would see less tickets being issues.
"The point is, if people do not park in the correct place they will get a ticket, but what I do find upsetting is wardens seem to be overzealous."
Mr Marsburg said wardens should use more discretion and give more warnings.

BRIDLINGTON MAN AWARDED HONOUR
A FORMER East Riding lifeboatman is to be awarded one of the RNLI's highest honours for leaping to the rescue of a seriously ill crewman.
Andy Rodgers, the charity's divisional maintenance manager, jumped from a harbour wall in Whitehaven, Cumbria, onto a trawler, which had suffered mechanical failure and was being battered against the outer wall.
Mr Rodgers, 33, of Bridlington, then went to the aid of the man, whose face had been badly injured by a rope.
The former Bridlington RNLI volunteer's efforts on December 7 last year have earned him the Thanks Of The Institution Inscribed On Vellum.
He said: "It's a shock. It is all part of my day job.
"I'm honoured to have received the award but it is not all about me. At the end of the day, it was a team effort, from the crew onboard to the fundraisers who work hard to help keep the charity going."
Mr Rodgers, who was at work in Workington, rushed to the scene with a number of other volunteers from the base to offer their help from land as a lifeboat crew worked from the sea.
He said: "It was pretty windy with gusts of up to about 70mph at points.
"It is all a bit of a blur. I managed to jump onto the fishing boat and check he was OK.
"It was one of the worst injuries I have seen. The mooring rope had parted and gone across the side of his face. He was a Russian guy, so the communication side of things was a bit of a struggle."
The trawler was towed to the safer waters of the inner harbour before the injured man could be moved.
It had been heaving violently up and down in a heavy swell, putting the lifeboat and her crew at risk.
Once in the inner harbour, Coxswain John Stobbart used the lifeboat to nudge the trawler into the inner harbour wall, where it was secured.
Paramedics were then able to get on board to tend the injured man who was transferred to hospital, where he spent five days in an induced coma.
He has since recovered from his injuries.
Coxswain Stobbart is also to be honoured with a Vellum for the boat handling skills and leadership he demonstrated during the rescue, during which he contended with waves of up to 4m high.

COUNCIL INCREASES WASTE HELP TO BUSINESSES
East Riding of Yorkshire Council is increasing the ways in which it helps local businesses recycle more of their waste.
Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning, said: “East Riding residents who also work in this area frequently ask why businesses seem to find it more difficult to engage with recycling in the same way as householders.
“This council is keen to help businesses to recycle. By working together, the council and businesses can divert significant amounts of waste from landfill. This can have huge financial and environmental benefits.”
The council has signed a commitment of 12 pledges aimed at making recycling easier, and helping companies with their legal responsibilities to manage waste.
The pledges include help with donating unwanted items for re-use; assistance in locating quality, second-hand items, such as office equipment and cartridges; and a practical approach to enforcement.
This latter means that legal action will be taken only when other forms of action have failed and problems are being caused to neighbours and the environment.
Councillor Fraser said: “New laws on the management of waste affect all public bodies, including councils and businesses. They have come at a time when budgets are being squeezed.
“Local businesses are a vital part of our community and this commitment is the council’s way of showing we value them and want to provide what assistance we can.
“We are also encouraging companies to come to us with their own ideas so that we can play a more active role in managing their waste.”
Many of the pledges are free to all businesses to ensure they are legally complying with the laws about disposing of waste. Certain services will have to be paid for, including tailored waste collections.
FREE UNLIMITED SWIMMING FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN ON COUNCIL SWIMMING LESSONS
After a successful pilot at Beverley Leisure Complex and Leisure World, Bridlington, Swim East Riding, a major initiative to help residents with their swimming and health, will be rolled out at other council leisure centres.
Registration forms are now available at South Holderness Leisure Centre and will be available at the leisure centres in Driffield, Haltemprice, Hornsea and Withernsea, from Monday, 20 February, and Goole Leisure Centre, from Monday, 27 February.
East Riding Swim allows for an unlimited swim pass for all adults and children on the East Riding Learn to Swim Scheme which, when shown and swiped, allows them to swim free of charge, children under eight must be accompanied by an adult who would be charged.
The unlimited pass is valid for the duration of the person’s swimming course and can be presented at reception at any East Riding leisure centre for any swim session the person is eligible to attend.
Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for rural issues and cultural services, said: “Swim East Riding is an excellent initiative and will benefit residents who are learning to swim or have children learning to swim greatly.
“The council is determined that, during these uncertain economic times, residents should be able to continue to enjoy the full range of services available at culture and leisure facilities.
“Not only will this initiative save residents money, it will also have a positive impact on health and well-being, benefitting local communities.”
For further information about the council’s leisure centres and where Swim East Riding is available, call (01482) 395223, drop in to your local leisure centre or visit http://leisurecentres.eastriding.gov.uk/welcome/
